Lieutenant Colonel Timothy A. Silkowski assumed the role of executive officer of Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif., July 30.
Prior to taking on the XO job, Silkowski was director of Fleet Support Division aboard the Yermo Annex of MCLB Barstow.
“My biggest concern at FSD was focusing on having equipment ready for the Fleet Marine Force, and here our customer is the tenants on this base,” Silkowski said.
As his predecessor Lt. Col. Kenneth Lee noted, Silkowski is now equivalent to the deputy mayor of a small city.
“My main jobs will be working a lot with facilities and civilians and acting as a buffer for the CO,” he continued. “I will be handling problems as they come up and before they get to the CO.”
Silkowski also noted, he will not even have to drive to work anymore.
“This is a nice move for me precisely because I don’t have to move, since I live on Officers’ Row,” he said. “I can put my boys on a bus right in front of my house and they get dropped off right in front of my house and it’s all within walking distance.”
Although his main task will be working with base commander Col. Craig Clemans, Silkowski also wants to work closely with the Marines.
“I would like to concentrate on keeping morale up, because a lot of Marines get sent here and many feel like they’re off the grid,” he said.
Silkowski’s office in Headquarters building has the look of a museum devoted to military history, reflecting his passion for the subject.
“My dad always said if you want a bright new idea read an old book,” he said. “Human civilization keeps repeating the same mistakes over and over again because they lose sight of history.”
He has been deployed five times during his career, twice to Iraq, twice to Afghanistan and once to the Philippines to advise the military there during their battle against terrorism.
Silkowski said the attributes of MCLB Barstow make it a strategic asset for the Marine Corps: It is geographically ideal because of the freeway and rail systems and the environmental conditions make it ideal for the long-term outdoor storage of huge military equipment.
Putting all those issues aside, Silkowski wanted every Marine and Civilian Marine aboard base to know one thing.
“I always have the best interests of this organization and the people aboard it in mind and will do everything I can to promote the safety and welfare of the employees and Marines while continuing to help maintain Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow as a viable and valuable asset to the Marine Corps.”
