Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow’s Fire and Emergency Services received top honors as the 2017 United States Marine Corps’ Medium Fire Department of the Year during a ceremony held in San Diego, Calif., July 17.
“Each year, Marine Corps leadership identifies and honors Marine Corps FES departments and personnel for their professionalism and dedication,” said Deputy Fire Chief Ryan Tworek. “The departmental and individual winners showcase the full scope of incident responses such as fire prevention, continuing education, and community outreach services.”
The awards are presented in 11 categories for both organizations and individuals. The USMC Award winners become the Marine Corps nominees to the Department of Defense FES Awards program established by DoD Instruction 6055.06.
“To qualify for the Medium Fire Department Category the fire department must have four to eight staffed firefighting companies,” Tworek explained.
The award was presented by Maj. Gen. Vincent A. Coglianese, Commander, Marine Corps Installations Command/Assistant Deputy Commandant Installations and Logistics (Facilities) and Sgt. Maj. Charles R. Williams, Marine Corps Installations Command sergeant major. Also present to receive the award was Col. Sekou S. Karega, commanding officer and Danny Strand, FES director on MCLB Barstow.
MCLB Barstow Fire & Emergency Services responds to calls on base, but also off of the base in the local community for incidents such as fires, car accidents and medical alerts. They also send resources to help battle wildfires such as the Carr Fire and Cranston Fire currently. The job also comes with inherent dangers which have been highlighted in the news recently as four firefighters throughout the state of California have lost their lives while combatting wildfires.
"There is a reason we call them firefighters,” Strand said. “It's because fighting a fire is like going into combat to do battle with an enemy that can kill you."
