FORT MCCOY, Wis. – Hours before the sun shines on Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, U.S. Army Reserve Soldiers from across the 200th Military Police Command are out in the field taking part in exercise Lethal Warrior.
Lethal Warrior is an exercise that trains Soldiers in 41 different tasks, breaking those down into four different sections: land navigation and movement techniques, operating a radio, first aid, reacting to a chemical or biological attack and other situational training exercises.
More than 400 reserve Soldiers passed through training Tuesday.
Master Sgt. William London, noncommissioned officer for Lethal Warrior training, thinks it’s a great idea to refresh these basic warrior skills.
“Let NCOs do NCO stuff and train Soldiers as we’re supposed to,” said London. “You’re so focused on your job and your MOS, that the basic warrior tasks are falling off.”
The Army has been facing a counter insurgency and non-state actors in Iraq and Afghanistan, and now soldiers must re-focus on the near-peer threat.
There are 45 instructors throughout the training area.
Sgt. Caleb Whitney, a corrections and detention specialist with the 367th Military Police Company is an instructor at the first aid station.
Whitney taught the group how to apply several types of bandages and clear a Soldier’s airway.
“They are definitely very engaged and seem pretty motivated to be here and get some hands-on training with this stuff,” said Whitney.
As the training continues over the next few days, Soldiers will operate as a squad in more complex situations to demonstrate they are proficient in those 41 tasks.
“It gives me an opportunity to stretch myself and go out of my normal skillset … (I) try and not only learn some new skills, but … pass on the knowledge of them as well,” said Whitney.
Once the MP Soldiers have rotated through the Lethal Warrior Training they will train in MP specific tasks such as internment operations, biometrics, reflexive fire, non-lethal Tasers and other situational training exercises.
