PACIFIC OCEAN—The wind sprays water into the air drenching passengers of the U.S. Coast Guard 45-foot Response Boat Medium as it tears through the swells between the islands of Maui and Molokai. Carrying troops and supplies to the Tropic Care Maui County 2018 clinic site on Molokai, the U.S. Coast Guard Station Maui crew dropped everything to help out service members from the Air National Guard, Air Force, Navy Reserve, Army, and Marine Corps Reserve who are in Maui, Molokai, and Lanai this week for the joint service health care training mission.
The coxswain, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Grant Hadley, assigned to USCG Station Maui, navigates the waters between the islands at a speed of nearly 30 knots (35 mph). This type of mission is not a common event for the USCG Station Maui.
“Here in Maui, our primary mission is Search and Rescue and recreational boater safety,” said Hadley. “We just care about people’s safety and we want to enforce that safety.”
However, when asked for their help, the members of USCG Station Maui jumped into action in a near last minute transportation mission.
“I just received a phone call saying [the Air Force] wanted help,” said Hadley. “I said, ‘Sure, we can facilitate that.’ It was no problem at all.”
With approximately 25 members on station and several boats in their fleet, the USCG Station Maui is always ready and willing to spring into action.
“Being in the Coast Guard, it’s a very dynamic service,” said Hadley. “I understand how last minute things work and I’m all about facilitating that if it’s possible and helping other people out because I know that if we need it people are going to help us out.”
The full crew consisted of four Coast Guardsmen assigned to the USCG Station Maui: boatswain mate Grant Hadley operated as the coxswain, or the steersman, U.S. Coast Guard Seaman Chandler Drysol, a boat crew member, U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Turner Setlich, a boatswain mate, and U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class Wayne Pagan, a machinery technician.
Thanks to the USCG Station Maui’s unique capabilities and the mission readiness of these four Coast Guardsmen, several troops and much needed supplies were delivered within a matter of hours to the Tropic Care Maui County 2018 Molokai clinic site to allow the site to continue functioning at full capacity and provide no cost health, dental, and eye care to the public.
The Molokai clinic is one of six sites operating as part of the Tropic Care Maui County 2018 Innovative Readiness Training mission this week. About 350 military personnel are taking part in the Tropic Care mission.
