WAILUKU, Hawaii—When U.S. Navy Reserve Lt. Michelle Love and U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Rebecca Davis left the Kaoru Moto Army Reserve Center in Wailuku on August 10 to go for a run after a long day’s work on a joint military health care training mission, they discussed whether they should run east or west along the road. They decided to run west.

As they crossed an overpass they noticed a young woman sitting on the overpass ledge as traffic passed beneath her. “We approached slowly,” said Davis. “We could see that she was crying.” Love and Davis flanked the teen and began asking her questions. “She was upset about something and couldn’t handle herself anymore.”

Love is assigned to Expeditionary Medical Facility Dallas, Detachment 1, and Davis is assigned to McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. They were both able to put their military training into practice. “Suicide awareness training always helps because I do know those [critical questions] to ask,” said Davis, who lost a friend to suicide three years ago. As for Love, “She’s a nurse,” Davis said. “She was able to look into her face to see if anything was wrong physically.”

Soon, a husband and wife who had driven under the overpass pulled up. They came over to help—“the wife was holding her, hugging her the whole time,” said Davis. They talked calmly with the young woman and tried to assure her that they were there for her.

Lt. Love called 9-1-1, and police responded quickly, followed by paramedics. Eventually, they convinced the young woman to go in an ambulance.

“I’m glad that we chose to go running [on Friday], because we had talked about not running,” Love said. “I’m glad that we chose to help when we could have just kept running.”

The morning after the incident, Love and Davis helped to open the Central Maui clinic of Tropic Care Maui County 2018, a military Innovative Readiness Training mission to provide medical, dental, and vision care at six sites in Maui, Molokai, and Lanai. For the Central Maui clinic at the University of Hawaii Maui College, Love is serving as the assistant officer in charge, and Davis is serving as the non-commissioned officer in charge. Tropic Care will run from August 11-19.
