NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba – The Joint Detention Group sponsored an Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Festival at Cooper Field, May 26, as part of Joint Task Force Guantanamo’s Equal Opportunity Program honoring Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month.
The JTF GTMO Equal Opportunity Program Manager spoke about why the festival is important for JTF GTMO and the Armed Forces as a whole.
“The purpose of these events is to educate our Joint Community on Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage,” she said. “It’s a great way to learn about the culture, better communicate, and better relate to our brothers and sisters in arms on a personal level.”
The festival featured a brief ceremony with a guest speaker and the WT Sampson Middle and High School band performed a selection of songs. Attendees were able to enjoy informational displays, a documentary, and seven different cuisines from Asia and the Pacific Islands, including dishes from India, Thailand, and the Philippines.
During the ceremony the officer-in-charge of organizing the festival remarked that Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have served and contributed to every aspect of military life.
“Our military is fortunate to gain from them and all diversity,” he said.
The EO Program Manager also expressed her gratitude for those involved in putting the festival together.
“Thank you to all the JTF and Naval Station Guantanamo Bay volunteers, our JTF team of EO Leaders, and the NAVSTA Multicultural Organization who helped facilitate this event so we could celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage together.”
