NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba — Joint Task Force Guantanamo’s Maritime Security Detachment hosted the second annual Guantanamo Bay Coast Guard Ball, July 7. The ball was held to celebrate the United States Coast Guard’s Deployable Specialized Forces, and to honor the USCG’s upcoming 228th birthday, Aug. 4.
JTF GTMO Commander, Navy Rear Adm. John C. Ring, attended the event along with MARSECDET Commander, Coast Guard Capt. Matthew Wadleigh and several other distinguished visitors from JTF GTMO major commands and Naval Station Guantanamo Bay, which featured a pinning ceremony, a promotion ceremony, honoring the fallen, and a guest speaker.
During his remarks, the guest speaker gave a brief history of the USCG, highlighting the capability of each of the different DSFs: Maritime Safety and Security Teams; Maritime Security Response Teams; Law Enforcement Detachments; National Strike Teams; Regional Dive Lockers; and Port Security Units, like MARSECDET.
One JTF Coast Guard Sailor shared why events like the annual ball are important for all branches of the military, especially in a joint service environment like JTF GTMO.
“Being a smaller service and part of the Department of Homeland Security versus the Department of Defense, the other services don’t always realize what the Coast Guard can do, or that units like our Deployable Specialized Forces exist,” he said.
“The United States Coast Guard has a long history,” he continued. “We’ve been a part of every armed conflict of the United States, and events like this help us showcase what the Coast Guard does: that we have units that deploy overseas, to the Middle East, and all over the world. It’s all about spreading awareness and celebrating the Coast Guard’s contributions to the U.S. Armed Forces.”
Another JTF Trooper in attendance explained what the ball meant to her, as an Army Soldier.
“Attending an event like this gives other branches of the military an opportunity to see what the other services bring to the table and bring to the fight,” she said. “It’s an honor to serve alongside our Coast Guard counterpart.”
Following dinner and formal ceremonies, the ball concluded with a social, music, and dancing.
