LANAI, Hawaii (Aug. 14, 2018)— U.S. Air Force 2nd Lt. Brooke Bruton is a registered nurse assigned to the 181st Medical Group, Indiana Air National Guard. During the Tropic Care Maui County 2018 Innovative Readiness Training mission, Bruton is part of the medical services team helping the no-cost health care clinic located in Lanai City, Hawaii.

Bruton has been in the Air National Guard going on nine years, while serving eight years as an enlisted medical administrator before completing her nursing degree and submitting her officer package.

“When you go into the Guard, it gives you time to think about what you really want to do while also being productive so you’re still learning life skills and making money while you’re doing it,” said Bruton. “It was a productive use of my time to think about what I really wanted to do.”

Outside of the Air National Guard, Bruton works as an Emergency Room Registered Nurse at Saint Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. As soon as she heads back home, Bruton will be starting classes to become a nurse practitioner while still working at the hospital.

“When I got my nursing degree, I wanted to commission as an officer so I could be a nurse in the Air Force, and my ultimate goal would be [to serve as] a flight nurse. That would be pretty cool. That would be the pinnacle of my career if I got to do that,” said Bruton.

Currently, at Lanai, Bruton is helping with blood pressure screening, documenting medical history, pre-exam eye care, refracting, and helping process optometry patients.

“My first goal right now is to get my nurse practitioner, get a job working as that, and become comfortable as a nurse practitioner,” said Bruton.
Bruton was skeptical about studying to become a nurse, applying to nursing school, and becoming a nurse, but she likes to attempt things that make her uncomfortable.

“That’s how I choose to do most things in my life. If I think I can’t do it, then I go do it. Nobody else in my family has been in the military besides my grandfather, so I just wanted to do something completely different,” said Bruton. “Everybody is more capable of what they think they can and cannot do.”
