MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. –
Elementary school students and their parents got a firsthand look at the newly-constructed DeLalio Elementary School on Marine Corps Air Station New River, Aug. 14 during a guided tour put on by the school staff. DeLalio Elementary is the first school within Marine Corps Installations East built to follow the 21st century style of learning.
“We’ve been practicing the 21st century style of learning for about three years,” said Wyonia Chevis, principle of DeLalio Elementary. “The only thing that prevented us from being a 21st century school was the walls separating the rooms.”
According to Chevis, the 21st century style of learning focuses on collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving. The teachers facilitate student learning by creating productive classroom environments where students have the opportunity to develop skills they will eventually need in a work place.
“I think there are a lot of new opportunities for the students,” said Jonathan Campbell, a school counselor at DeLalio Elementary. “The materials and labs provided create a whole new learning environment for these kids to explore.”
The new school brings modern updates to replace the aging infrastructure of the previous 50-year-old school. It uses concepts such as modified learning spaces that allow teachers to open up or close classrooms as needed to meet educational needs.
“When I think of when I was in school, you had long rows of students where the teacher was typically at the front of the classroom teaching,” said Chevis. “In a 21st century style of teaching the children work in small groups and that’s what the classrooms are set up for. When kids are constantly working with a group they build trust and eventually feel comfortable with each other. It’s a really good way of learning.”
