MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, California – Wounded Warrior Battalion - West conducted a change of command ceremony at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, Aug. 17, 2018.
Lt. Col. Mary Flatley assumed command from Lt. Col. Stephen Mount after Mount lead the unit for the past two years. Flatley comes to Camp Pendleton from Marine Corps Base Quantico where she served as branch head at Manpower Management Promotions Branch.
“I was very, very humbled by receiving the news that I would become the commanding officer of the battalion,” said Flatley.
Wounded Warrior Bn. - West’s primary mission is rehabilitating injured Marines and Sailors by focusing on their mind, body, spirit, and family to guide them back to full duty, or assist in transitioning out of the armed forces.
The unit offers a diverse range of physical and medical treatments that are catered to each Marine and Sailors’ individual injury. The treatments include both physical and recreational therapy, medical rehabilitation and training. Additionally, Marines are provided instructional classes on developing a resume, preparing for interviews, and attending job fairs.
“We give the Marines and Sailors a road map to success to ensure that they can make a successful return to the fleet, or a smooth transition into the civilian sector,” said Sgt. Maj. Mario Fields, battalion sergeant major, Wounded Warrior Bn. - West.
The unit also offers it’s injured personnel a wide variety of athletic opportunities to maintain high levels of fitness and mental health.
The battalion has created a great reputation for itself by providing extraordinary care to its’ patients, carving the best possible route to success for each individual service member, according to Fields.
“My main plan going forward is to make sure that we continue to provide the tremendous care and opportunities that we offer to the service members,” said Flatley. “I hope to not only maintain what [LtCol Mount] has done, but to take it to the next level.”
