ANAHEIM, California – Three aircrews from Hawaii Wing, Civil Air Patrol, U.S. Air Force Auxiliary, flew over the islands of Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Molokai and Hawaii on Wednesday, August 22, 2018, to provide warnings along the coastline and carry out other tasks as Hurricane Lane continued approaching the area.
The airborne wing members also worked to count residents who might need to be moved to higher ground, as well as to identify hazards, unsecured vessels and populations in order to target storm response efforts.
Ten wing aircraft located throughout the islands have been secured in anticipation of the hurricane's arrival. An incident command post has been set up on the Big Island as the wing's mission base.
After the storm's passage, CAP expects to be called on by the Hawaii Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency to carry out damage assessment flights.
The hurricane is approaching as hundreds of CAP members and senior leaders from throughout the country are gathered in Anaheim, California, for the organization’s annual national conference.
CAP, the longtime all-volunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary, is the newest member of the Air Force’s Total Force. In this role, CAP operates a fleet of 560 aircraft, performs about 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually.
CAP’s 60,000 members also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. In addition, CAP plays a leading role in aerospace/STEM education, and its members serve as mentors to over 25,000 young people participating in CAP’s Cadet Programs.
