Iwakuni City and Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni residents participated in a basketball tournament in the Lotus Cultural Center, a part of the new Atago Sports Complex, in Iwakuni Japan, Aug. 19, 2018.
The Intramural Sports Program with Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) Iwakuni gave MCAS Iwakuni residents an opportunity to showcase their talents and build relationships with Iwakuni City residents.
βI think it makes our bond stronger with the Japanese,β said Bryan Wilkey, a Master Labor Contractor with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (H&HS). Wilkey said he heard about the event through MCCS.
Events like these are a part of the expansion of the Intramural Sports Program and an ongoing effort to increase ties with the local community.
The recently completed Atago Sports Complex is a common ground where sports enthusiasts from all backgrounds can connect and create friendships. Basketball is one of the many sports held at the complex- along with softball, baseball and soccer.
βIt allows us to bridge the gap between our host nation, Japan, and the U.S. and to build foreign relations, coming together to a common interest, which is the game of basketball,β said aviation maintenance administrator Chief Petty Officer Laquan Hansley, with Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 27. Hansley said that he felt he built new relationships with the Japanese players.
