Training Support Center (TSC) San Diego marked a one-month milestone of support for a pilot program that offers counseling services to students in sonar technician and mineman “A” schools, Aug. 27.

Yvette Currie, a deployed resiliency counselor (DRC), is supporting Sailors at Fleet Anti-Submarine Warfare Training Center (FLEASWTRACEN) one day a week, as part of a collaborative initiative with Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC).

“The pilot program is designed to bridge a gap between Recruit Training Command (RTC) and the fleet in providing resiliency skills to Sailors,” said Capt. Michael Feyedelem, commanding officer of TSC San Diego. “Significant efforts have recently been made to address resiliency at RTC, and DRCs have been deployed on big deck ships since 2014.

“However, we have Sailors who report from RTC and spend two years in ‘A’ school before reaching the fleet. This program is directed towards those students and will hopefully build on skills learned in RTC and help our Sailors better handle the stresses of service.”

DRCs serve as credentialed clinical counselors, assigned to support aircraft carriers, large deck amphibious ships, and landing helicopter assault ships. They deploy with the ship that they are assigned to and continue to hold office hours on the ship when at homeport. They provide short-term individual therapy and psycho-educational training on resiliency topics such as suicide prevention, substance abuse, and the prevention of sexual assault.

Currie, a native of San Diego and a licensed marriage and family therapist, completed a 10-month deployment with USS Carl Vinson and has worked with various squadrons stationed at Naval Air Station North Island.

“I grew up with some challenges, and this field seems like a way to make this world a better place,” said Currie, discussing why she become a DRC and the program’s goals. “What we provide is non-medical counseling that helps Sailors deal with life stressors. Our goal is to use counseling as a way to reduce or eliminate destructive behavior and ultimately help a Sailor maintain optimal performance.”

The counseling and support services that Currie offers are both preventative and treatment focused. In her short time at FLEASWTRACEN, she has already identified common trends with students.

"Some of the challenges that students face can range from balancing expectations between class and their personal lives to, for the new accession Sailors, adjusting to a new lifestyle,” said Currie.

Currie also pointed out the various benefits of using professional counseling as an additional resource.

"There are things that our Sailors may not feel comfortable discussing with their shipmates and would rather say out loud to a non-biased person with a professional outlook,” said Currie. “What I can offer is a solution-focused, non-judgmental presence that is backed with California State Board licensure. I can also provide Sailors with research trends and healthful trajectories that I have observed through 17 years of experience in the field.”

Working with FFSC, TSC San Diego will take a look at the results of the pilot as part of the staff’s ongoing commitment to provide mission-ready and capable students to the fleet.

“Leveraging programs like this is important to ensuring that our people are our greatest advantage over any competitor,” said Feyedelem. “We’re very interested in seeing what the outcome of this pilot is as we look for innovative and effective options, and the possibilities it has for students, as we help continue shaping them as Sailors.”
