Maintaining order and discipline is fundamental to building a cohesive unit, and the 51st Fighter Wing Equal Opportunity office ensures all military members are treated respectfully in and out of uniform.
Air Force EO offices accomplish their mission by promoting an environment free from personal, social or institutional barriers that could prevent Airmen from rising to their highest potential. Air Force policies are in place to ensure the organizations conduct their affairs free from unlawful discrimination and sexual harassment.
These policies also help ensure equal opportunity and treatment for all members based on their race, color, sex, national origin, religion, or sexual orientation.
“If personnel feel they have been discriminated against, they come to our office and we can address those concerns of discrimination or sexual harassment and ultimately to get them back to being mission focused,” said Master Sgt. Shalicia Wright, 51st FW EO superintendent. “If somebody came into work and they’re being discriminated against or sexually harassed, they can’t focus on the mission and give their best effort.”
EO personnel serve as third-party mediators who facilitate conversations between the aggrieved individuals and the respondent.
“We have the aggrieved person give their opening statement to determine the reason why they filed a complaint and to determine what would make [them] satisfied to be able to move forward,” said Tech. Sgt. Shiantee Walton, noncommissioned officer in charge of EO. “It’s just an open dialog between both parties and we’re just there to ask questions, clarify, and try to reach a common goal. It’s a good tool because it gets people talking and understanding without shouting and fighting. The third party creates that safe environment where everybody’s voice can be heard.”
Additionally, the team provides training, called True Colors, to help Airmen understand different personalities so Airmen can tailor their approach when communicating with others.
Airmen aren’t only held to these standards while on duty and are also responsible for their social media activity.
“Military members need to keep in mind we’re on duty 24/7,” Wright said. “We come from different walks of life, different experiences, so think about the impact you have on others.”
