The Japan Ground Self-Defense Force hosted their annual Fuji Firepower Demonstration Aug. 26 at the Combined Arms Training Center Camp Fuji, Gotemba, Japan.
The exercise brought members of the local and U.S. communities together to observe the capabilities and equipment of the JGSDF.
“The opportunity to observe the Fuji Firepower Demonstration, which included not only JGSDF but elements from across the JSDF joint force, was valuable in that it clearly demonstrated the potency and lethality of our alliance partners,” said Brig. Gen. Paul Rock Jr., commanding general of Marine Corps Installations Pacific and Marine Corps Base Camp Butler.
First open to the public in 1966, the JGSDF uses the largest demonstration as a way to improve the understanding of JGSDF. Public favor of the exercise has continually grown with 60,000 spectators from across Japan attending last year’s event.
About 3,000 service members carried out the exercises with the use of tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and guided missiles.
“The JSDF has top-tier capabilities operated by dedicated professionals and it showed during the demonstration,” said Rock.
To inform the audience on what they were about to witness an announcer described each sequence of events before it happened. The audience quietly waited for the order of execution and display of overwhelming firepower.
Each year more of the public is educated, which in turn builds confidence in the precision, skill sets, and proficiency of the JGSDF.
“I come away from the demonstration motivated to look for more opportunities to work with our JSDF partners,” said Rock. “It's great to be together on the same team with them.”
