The 179th Vehicle Maintenance shop, responsible for the upkeep of cars, trucks and equipment used daily for flight operations, had the opportunity to service and repair a large range of new vehicles, from forklifts to the heavy-duty Striker Fire Truck.
According to Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic Senior Airman Sky Hinton, he learned more efficient ways to empty jet fuel from refueler truck hoses.
Fleet Management and Analysis Specialist Mariah Brittain learned how to process paperwork for vehicle operations through several new Navy systems, increasing job knowledge from a joint perspective.
179th members assisted 647th Supply troops in preparing Individualized Protective Equipment for upcoming deployments. According to Inventory Manager Staff Sergeant Zachary Tadijanac, the 179th Airmen are working together with the 647th Airmen to the complete the initial cleanup of over 800 M4 rifles. The unit is upgrading from M16 rifles to M4 rifles to increase personnel protection in deployed environments. The rifles need to be properly serviced and cleaned before use to adhere to Air Force safety standards.
The 179th Petroleum, Oils, and Lubricants shop received hands on training fueling up F-22 Raptor aircraft with land refueling vehicle variants new to the Airmen, operating under a Naval Logistics system. According to Fuels Specialist Senior Airman Mckala Moore, the new experience will help them forward in their career when they will deploy and have to adapt to new systems and equipment.
179th Logistics Planners are responsible for planning, coordinating and tracking deployments and redeployments of personnel and cargo and manage the Base Support Plan, which is a response package for a war situation, communication between agencies in and outside of the Airforce.
The 179th troops assisted the 647th Logistics Planners in preparing and conducting Operation “Hele On”, a Military and Family Life Counselor program. The program consisted of children running through scenarios their parent’s experience when they deploy or have to go through certain exercises. The Logistics Planners and MFLAC employees created functions such as a chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive equipment try on station, Meals Ready to Eat stations and a C-17 long-haul military transport aircraft tour to help the children gain perspective on their parent’s experiences.
In the words of Senior Airman Sky Hinton, “ For us coming to these big active duty bases, we have an opportunity to learn different types of techniques to implement in deployments and at our home station.”
