MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune encompasses approximately 161,000 acres of land and is home to many forms of wildlife. Managing the two largely falls on a dedicated team of Conservation Law Enforcement Officers (CLEO).
Wildlife enforcement, safe hunting environments and enforcing all applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to natural resources are the primary responsibility of Conservation Law Enforcement Offices at every installation.
This year, Marine Corps Installations East-MCB Camp Lejeune hosted a CLEO training course that ran from Aug. 27 through Aug. 31.
“We have the CLEOs from each Marine Corps base throughout the United States except Hawaii here for training,” said Paul Boniface, chief CLEO, MCIEAST-MCBCamp Lejeune. “Over the week-long period we cover a lot of classroom work teaching the officers how to work with the media, first aid, handling permits and(hearing from) the lawyers from Headquarters Marine Corps. Outside of the classroom we cover weapons qualifications, boat operations, archaeology and nuisance wildlife issues.”
CLEOs are qualified in accordance with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife regulations and are mandated to qualify twice a year. The training is held at a different Marine Corps base every year.
“This training is really important because it gives the wardens from all over the Marine Corps the opportunity to work together for a week,” said Leo Williams, CLEO, Marine Corps Air Station Yuma. “The things we do in Yuma differ from areas like Camp Lejeune or MCAS Cherry Point because we work in the desert. We benefit by gaining insight to the different things each base will do depending on their location.”
CLEOs regularly performs patrols through the bases, looking for poachers and scrappers who may be attempting to illegally obtain artifacts, endangered species or metal from expended munition casings and ordnance, both exploded and unexploded.
“We’re the protectors of the wildlife and we have to make sure that everyone is doing things correctly,” said Boniface.
