LANAI CITY, Hawaii - U.S. Air Force Maj. Brian Rounds, a dentist assigned to the Washington Air National Guard’s 194th Medical Group, traveled to Lanai in August to take part in a health services training mission. While Rounds provided dental services to the public on Lanai, he had a small-world encounter.
Rounds knew that his wife had a relative living on the island. His mother-in-law told his wife that she had a cousin who had worked as a dentist on Lanai, but she could not remember his name initially, said Rounds.
Rounds’ wife visited the island early in the mission and looked for her mother’s cousin. She was hoping to meet this cousin once-removed, but because her mother couldn’t remember his name she wasn’t able to make contact before she returned home, said Rounds.
Then Rounds’ mother-in-law remembered her cousin’s name: Paul. With that new information, Rounds asked Lanai Tropic Care site coordinator Joelle Aoki if she knew of a dentist named Paul. Not only did Aoki know Paul, but he was her next door neighbor, said Rounds.
Paul Fujimoto and his wife Nat were able to come by the clinic and meet with Rounds and exchange contact information, said Rounds.
“This would not be possible if I had not been there for the IRT!” said Rounds.
Tropic Care Maui County 2018 was a part of a Department of Defense Innovative Readiness Training program that provided no-cost medical, vision, and dental services to the public from August 11-19. The exercise allowed military members to receive hands-on training while providing health services to people in Maui, Molokai, and Lanai.
