Marine Corps Community Services held an Iwakuni Expo at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Sept. 8, 2018.
The purpose of the event was to educate and inform residents and service members of on-base and off-base resources available to them.
“It is a great way to see on and off base resources,” said Sarah Gureck, the personal and professional development advisor for MCCS. “This is a great way for new people to the air station to learn, but also for people who have been here for a few years still looking for things they haven’t discovered.”
Gureck said it was a way to not only discover the “ins” and “outs” or MCAS Iwakuni, but Iwakuni City and the surrounding areas as well.
The expo also held drawings, and vendors at each table gave away items to every visitor that came to see them. There were also Zumba performances and people dressed up in dragon costumes for entertainment.
Prizes from the drawings included opera tickets, gift certificates, free hotel stays, and free ski lift tickets to name a few.
“I really enjoyed being able to walk around and receive gifts while trying to learn more about the air station,” said Julie Garnett, an MCAS Iwakuni resident. “I am very pleased to see this base being so hospitable.”
Garnett said she can’t wait till the next expo because it is such a great way for the community to learn about what is available to them.
“The turnout has been great,” said Gureck. “We’ve had a lot of interaction with the participants, and it’s been a good number overall.”
