EASTOVER, S.C. -- More than 25 Pennsylvania National Guard members arrived at McEntire Joint National Guard Base here Thursday.
They, along with two UH-60 Black Hawk and two CH-47 Chinook helicopters, are prepositioned ahead of the anticipated impact of Hurricane Florence.
Aircraft and crew members, including personnel with the Pennsylvania Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team, landed, completed in-processing and were briefed for the mission. Crews then moved the helicopters inside hangars.
"The Pennsylvania National Guard and PA-HART members are highly-trained for the missions they will be expected to accomplish,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Mike Smith, a CH-47 Chinook pilot and member of the Pennsylvania National Guard in South Carolina. “We have strong capabilities, including rescuing stranded citizens with a hoist. Just in 2017, the Pennsylvania National Guard employed those capabilities while responding to three hurricanes.”
The Pennsylvania National Guard members, as well as members of the Pennsylvania Helicopter Aquatic Rescue Team, will carry out missions as directed by local authorities.
Citizens in the potential affected area are reminded to heed warnings from authorities and evacuate, especially if prompted.
