Demonstrating the spirit of a true joint-force effort, McGhee Tyson ANG Base, tenant unit Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF#2) and McGhee Tyson Airport are working together to assist fellow services during a natural disaster.
Hurricane Florence has left a great deal of damage and destruction in its path along the Outer Banks of North Carolina and the coast of South Carolina. Several units from various branches of service have staged aircraft at McGhee Tyson to respond to the aftermath of the massive storm. McGhee Tyson ANG Base’s geographical location in East Tennessee naturally makes it a convenient staging area for aircraft and crews responding to possible search and rescue mission requests from neighboring states.
Rotary wing aircraft from Illinois, Connecticut, New York, Mississippi, Indiana, and Nebraska are prepositioned to respond to request for aid. U.S. Army CH-47 Chinook, UH-60 Blackhawk, and SH-60 Seahawk Navy helicopters are prepared to go at a moment’s notice.
McGhee Tyson Airport, adjacent to the base, is currently host to a number of aircraft from Eastern North Carolina that fled the torrential rains and winds of the hurricane. AV-8B Harrier jets from Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point line the tarmac as crews anxiously await word that the storm has passed so they can return to duty.
