MONTEREY, Calif. -- Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Monterey and Naval Postgraduate School pinned six new chief petty officers (CPO) at the historic Weckerling Center at the Presidio of Monterey, Friday, Sept. 14.
It was standing room only at the ceremony; one steeped in more than a century of naval tradition. Families and friends from around the country joined colleagues, leaders, and subordinates from IWTC Monterey and Naval Postgraduate School to welcome six new members to the Chiefs Mess.
Advancement to the rank of chief petty officer is one of the most significant milestones in any enlisted person’s career.
”To have achieved this accomplishment and to continue serving as a chief petty officer is a calling; not a job, not a career, nor a task – it is something special,” said Cmdr. Michael Salehi, commanding officer of IWTC Monterey, in his remarks to the selectees who were about to be pinned. “Chief selects, today you are entrusted more than ever to potentially lead our best and brightest into harm’s way.”
This year’s new chiefs from IWTC Monterey include: Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Demian Ford, Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Jeffrey Hansen, Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Alexander Pototsky and Chief Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician Jason Robinson. From the Naval Postgraduate School include: Chief Cryptologic Technician (Networks) Jack Turner and Chief Logistics Specialist Dimitry Afanasyev. Both commands are located in Monterey, California, and due to their relatively small sizes, have a tradition of combining their chief selectees for “Chief Season.”
While not unprecedented, it is unusual to have so many selectees for the area.
“Chief Season” refers to the intensive training, typically about six weeks, that begins with the release of CPO selection board results and continues until the morning of the pinning ceremony. This training has gone by many names over the years, from Initiation to Induction to CPO 365 Phase II, and back to Initiation again. Whatever the name, it is designed to prepare the selectees for their transition from first class petty officers to chief petty officers in the United States Navy.
“The success of our Navy hinges on the effectiveness of the chief on the deckplate,” said Master Chief Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) Christopher Stevens, IWTC Monterey’s senior enlisted leader. “I have no doubt our newest chiefs will answer the call.”
IWTC Monterey, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of foreign language training to Navy personnel, which prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
