NAVAL STATION GUANTANAMO BAY, Cuba —
Joint Task Force Guantanamo Troopers and Naval Station Guantanamo Bay residents attended a 9/11 remembrance ceremony at the NSGB chapel, Sept. 11.

JTF GTMO Commander, and guest speaker, Navy Rear Adm. John C. Ring, naval station residents, and members of the Joint Task Force attended the ceremony. Ring spoke of 9/11’s significance and the affect it had on American history.

“Over the past 241 years, very few things have electrified the country into action,” he said. “The Boston Massacre, Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, the sinking of the RMS Lusitania leading America into WWI, and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, are just a few examples of when American tenacity was tested and answered back in a tremendous way.”

Ring said that, September 11, 2001, can be added to that list, and alluded to how that infamous day had a similar impact with a previous generation in the wake of the John F. Kennedy assassination, where everyone remembers where they were the moment of the “event.” For the Troopers here today, Ring said, many of whom were very young when it happened, 9/11 has personal resonance.

“Our mission is the result of the attacks on September 11, we are the proof of American resolve, and we are Honor Bound to Defend Freedom,” said Ring.

To commemorate and memorialize those who died seventeen years ago, a bell was tolled for the following six events: at 08:46, when American Flight 11 collided into the North Tower; at 09:03, when United Flight 175 collided into the South Tower; at 09:37, when American Flight 77 collided into the Pentagon; at 09:59, when the South Tower collapsed; when at 10:03, United Flight 93 crashed in a remote field in Shanksville, PA; and when at 10:28, the North Tower collapsed.

As the longest-running war in American history continues, Ring noted the resiliency of Americans when faced with adversity.

“Not only did we rebuild, but as a nation we rose up out of the ashes of New York, Washington DC, and Pennsylvania—united as one,” said Ring.
