The 104th Civil Engineering Squadron Explosive Ordnance Disposal team has been providing force protection for events such as the Rhode Island National Guard Air Show for a number of years. The 104th Fighter Wing EOD team was approached by Tech. Sgt. Kevin Ferreira, 143rd Maintenance Squadron munitions inspector, while they were supporting the air show in 2016. He asked if they could help with ammunition disposal requests from the 143rd Airlift Wing.
The request started an effective partnership that provides a more cost-efficient way to complete ADRs for the 143rd AW as well as a unique training opportunity for the 104th EOD Airmen that ensures mission readiness.
The 104th EOD team worked with Ferreira to complete an ADR Sept. 17, 2018, at Fort Devens, Massachusetts.
“If I were to ship these to be destroyed, it’d be endless amounts of dollars,” said Ferreira, pointing to a stack of flares with an expired shelf life. “This frees up warehouse space for usable munitions.”
Ferreira said that he has been able to call upon the 104th EOD team at least six times over the last two and a half years. He estimates the partnership has saved his unit somewhere between $100,000 and $125,000.
The 104th EOD shop takes advantage of the requests as a way to make sure their Airmen are mission ready.
“We really appreciate the opportunity to get some training from this partnership,” said Senior Master Sgt. Jeremiah W. McClosky, 104th CES EOD superintendent. “And there is all of the money saved.”
McClosky said the EOD team also disposes of munitions from the 104th FW and has been contacted by the 103rd Airlift Wing to help them complete ADRs.
According to Senior Airman Kyle Doran, 104th CES EOD technician, the partnerships have been good for the units as well as the Airmen personally.
“It provides extra training while I’m in upgrade training,” said Doran “I’m getting certified while I’m out here. It’s good for me.”
