Every summer the U.S. Navy advances proven First Class Petty Officers (FCPO) to the rank of Chief Petty Officer (CPO). These sailors have shown the technical knowledge and leadership abilities to be hand selected as the guiding force to shape the Navy in years to come. To be a Chief means that you have been selected to be the foremost deck plate leader whose understanding of matters technical and procedural is rivaled by none. This type of leader understands the difference between leadership, supervision, and management, and knows when each of those skillsets is most appropriate.
Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station (NCTS) Sicily helped lead the charge in new CPOs with the selection of three new Chiefs, 30% of those eligible for selection this year. With Navy wide Chief quotas standing at just over 25%, NCTS Sicily shows once again that the valuable training and leadership experience gained at this command has provided an edge to its FCPOs in being accepted among the ranks of the Chief’s Mess.
NCTS Sicily’s Command Master Chief William Worthen says, "Advancing to the Rank of Chief Petty Officer puts you in the top 10 Percent of the Enlisted Force and that is some pretty elite company. In the CPO Creed it says ‘More will be expected of you, more will be demanded of you. Not because you are an E-7, But because you are now a CHIEF PETTY OFFICER. You have not merely been promoted one pay grade-you have joined an exclusive fraternity, and as in all fraternities, you have a responsibility to your brothers and sisters even as they have a responsibility to you.’”
With the newly selected CPOs of NCTS Sicily ready to face the challenges of Chief Select Season and their new lives as CPOs, our Fleet is stronger and better able to face the trials of an uncertain world.

NCTS Sicily reports to U.S. Fleet Cyber Command, the Navy component command to U.S. Strategic Command and U.S. Cyber Command, to provide secure and reliable telecommunications in EUCOM, AFRICOM, and CENTCOM theaters of operation. The command represents a long history of superior command and control to a vital region of the world.
