Story by Sgt. 1st Class Craig Norton

    382nd Public Affairs Detachment

PABRADE TRAINING AREA, Lithuania – Herding animals and people has been an American tradition, process since the beginning of time.

This tradition is no different in the U.S. military,

During the 1st Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division’s, support of Atlantic Resolve in Europe deployment they’ve been herding their formations throughout Europe for live-fire training exercises.

Within the past thirty days the squadron’s four troops have conducted LFXs at Varpalota Training Area, Hungary, Swietoszow, Poland, Multinational Training Area Lest, Slovakia and Pabrade Training Area, Lithuania. Conducting troop LFXs, from the same squadron, at different locations isn’t normal protocol.

Alpha troop, 1-7 CAV, conducted their LFX with a tank platoon assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 1st ABCT, 1st CD, and a Lithuanian mortar platoon assigned to the Mechanized Infantry Brigade “Iron Wolf” at Pabrade Training Area, Lithuania, Sept. 24-25, 2018.

Additionally, their LFX location is the most current Northern European Training location for a Garryowen or Ironhorse unit while supporting Atlantic Resolve in Europe.

This LFX provided an opportunity for 1-7 CAV to conduct a multinational training exercise with a NATO ally.

“This training has opened our eyes to not only the training styles they (the Lithuanians) have, but also our cultural differences and our similarities working together and the different equipment we have“, said U.S. Army 2nd Lt. Sonia Ortiz, a chemical officer assigned to 1-7 CAV.

Growth is a result of any training exercise, especially during a multinational training exercise.

“This (multinational) training exercise has allowed me to go further as an noncommissioned officer, train/lead my own Soldiers and assist soldiers from a NATO country,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Mason Hammond, an indirect fire infantryman assigned to 1-7 CAV. “Allowed the unit greater variety when conducting training exercises allowing more organic units and more organizations assist and accomplish the mission. A real team building and effective training exercise.”

Relationships are a critical component of a being successful on the battlefield, as well as in life. These relationships take time and energy to build and mature.

“It’s extremely important that the U.S. Army works with NATO,” said Ortiz. “It not only helps us strengthen our relationships, but It also improves our training, not only amongst our troops, but with our NATO allies.”

The Garryowen’s Squadron is of seven battalion-level formations assigned to the Ironhorse brigade deployed in support of Atlantic Resolve in Europe.
