“A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…”
The children stirred anxiously as they awaited the fate of a crucial member of the rebel alliance, Luke Skywalker, for destroying the home of the galactic empire, the death star.
The 47th Flying Training Wing judge advocate team performed a mock trial for children to teach them how the judicial system works at the Laughlin youth center May 23 and May 30, 2018. In the trial, Luke Skywalker, was accused of exploding the death star, killing more than a million personnel assigned to the Empire’s greatest weapon—so the popular science fiction story goes.
“Innocent!” yelled the children at the top of their lungs. “Guilty!” yelled others in disagreement.
They soon after came to the conclusion Skywalker was innocent. As the mock trial came to an end they cheered loud for the newly-found innocent savior of the galaxy.
“The mock trial was a fun way to give the children a preview into what a real court would be like and it also gave them a chance to act as panel members and decide the fate of Luke Skywalker,” said Senior Airman Dylan Rossitto, 47th JA military justice paralegal.
The mock trial was performed in conjunction with Law Day, which falls on May 1, and meant to reflect on the role of law in the foundation of the country and to recognize its importance in society.
“Law Day is aimed to help people appreciate their liberties and to affirm their loyalty to the United States, especially with regard to equality and justice,” said Rossitto. “It’s an opportunity for people to ask questions and learn about a vital part of their country.”
Rossitto strongly believes the future is in the youth’s hands and how we educate them on our country’s legal system will determine how they will lead it.
“The kids are future leaders of society and my favorite thing is that I can keep inspiring them to take interest in making those important decisions for our country in the future,” said Rossitto.
