VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Information Systems Technician 1st Class Jonathan Pilson, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, currently serves as an instructor at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach.

Pilson enlisted in the Navy in April of 2012, and following his completion of basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, he reported to his first duty station aboard USS Wasp (LHD 1), where he served as the leading petty officer (LPO), combat systems officer of the watch, and communications watcher officer. His duties included information assurance compliance, management of the message center, and maintenance and operation of command, control, communications, computers, intelligence and combat systems network and satellite systems, to include the management of tactical and administrative internet protocol, voice, and video circuits.

Additionally, he served as the ship’s assistant electronic key management system manager. He was responsible for the management and maintenance of all controlled cryptographic items and keying material for all communication security systems and circuits. While aboard, he qualified as an enlisted information warfare specialist and enlisted surface warfare specialist.

Pilson is now the LPO of three advanced information systems “C” and “F” schools, and is the Naval Tactical Command Support System course curriculum model manager. He led four Sailors, two contractors, and one civilian in delivery of 2,360 hours of instruction, throughout 17 convenes to 149 Sailors with a 100 percent graduation rate. He personally delivered 680 hours of instruction and corrected system configuration for five degraded system applications, which restored the use of seven job sheets, impacting the applicability of 39 skill proficiency level two learning objectives. Through direct mentorship and leadership, his Sailors exceled and achieved Junior Instructor of the Quarter, Instructor of the Quarter, 100 percent instructor certification, one associate degree, and three of his Sailors qualified as master training specialists.

“Serving in the Navy is one of the most rewarding job experiences I have ever had,” said Pilson. “I feel privileged to serve. The Navy has provided me the means to visit many countries and has given me the opportunity to serve in significant real world missions. I’ve had the honor to be part of essential watch stations that made our missions a success. I continue to set goals for myself and I’ve been blessed to have leaders who have challenged and have guided me to exceeded my own expectations and goals. I aspire to one day serve as a naval officer.”

Pilson has a rich family history of military service, with many of his family members having previously served or currently serving in the armed forces. As a second generation Sailor, he feels tremendous honor and pride. He proudly relieved the watch from his grandfather, who served during the Vietnam War.

“It is an honor and privilege to serve in the United States Navy,” added Pilson. “I wake up every day and put on my uniform with pride. I look forward to leading my division and training Sailors in maintaining and operating tactical, logistic, and administrative systems that support our mission in maintaining maritime superiority and training the lethal war fighters, which maintains the safety in the home front and preservation of our democracy that my family and friends love dearly.”

IWTC Virginia Beach currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contract members who train over 6,400 students every year at five training sites in the Hampton Roads area.
