At 11:30 a.m. Oct. 31, Rumpel Fitness Center will hold the “No Treats, Just Tricks” relay race/walk. All participants must be dressed in Halloween costumes. The run is a three-person relay race; each team member will run 1 mile. Walking teams will walk 1 mile and must start and finish together.
Prizes will be awarded to the fastest relay and walking teams and for the top three costumes. The event is free and open to all eligible Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation patrons.
Registration is required by 11 a.m. Oct. 31. Call 608-388-2290 or visit Rumpel Fitness Center for information.
The Directorate of Emergency Services will be out in force at South Post Housing on Oct. 31 to help ensure Families have a fun and safe Halloween. Police will patrol the area during trick-or-treat hours, which will be 4 to 7 p.m. The Fire Department will have a fire engine on display, and personnel will hand out plastic fire hats to children.
The Installation Safety Office offers several tips to keep Halloween festivities safe:
* Supervise children and stay in familiar, well-lit neighborhoods.
* Dusk is the time of poorest visibility for drivers. Try to trick or treat while it is still daylight.
* Choose a costume that is easy to walk in, easy to see out of, and can be seen by drivers. Light colors and reflective tape are recommended. Make-up is better for a child’s visibility than a mask.
* Costumes and wigs can be dangerous around open flames. Choose nonflammable materials, give children flashlights, and use battery-operated candles in decorations.
* Treats should be checked for potential poisoning or unsafe objects. Unpackaged items like popcorn or loose candies and candy with torn wrappers should be discarded.
* If you have any suspicions about any treats, report it to law enforcement so that other parents may be warned and the people responsible caught. The Fort McCoy Police Department can be reached 608-388-2000. Dial 911 in an emergency.
