BALTIMORE (NNS) -- The Freedom-class littoral combat ship USS Milwaukee (LCS 5) opened its decks to students of Mergenthaler Vocational Technical High School as a part of Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore (MDFWASB) on Oct. 5.
Milwaukee crew members led the group of 150 students from the pier, through the ship and up to the forecastle while describing the ship’s intricate systems as well as life aboard the combat ship.
“It means a lot to these kids to be able to see something like this… something completely different,” said the school group’s manager and Navy veteran, Michael Wilkinson. “This is an opportunity for them to see something other than city life and it is sparking so much curiosity and spurring their love of technology.”
During MDFWASB, the Milwaukee is expecting more than 10,000 visitors over the course of three days. Sailors giving the tours are excited for the chance to show off their ship.
“It’s really cool to see kids come onboard and to be so interested in what we have to say,” said Operations Specialist 1st Class David Powell, one of the ship’s tour guides. “I was in the Sea Cadet program when I was their age, so I’m enjoying the opportunity to be a role model as an adult. The chance to get to inspire these kids like I was inspired is amazing.”
While ported in Baltimore, Milwaukee will be open for public tours and will host a myriad of special guests such as congressmen, private school groups and Baltimore Ravens Cheerleaders.
Throughout Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore, Oct. 3-9, U.S., Canadian and British navy vessels will be available for embarking visitors in the Inner Harbor, Fells Point and Locust Point. Service members will be participating in an array of other activities, including visiting local schools, conducting ship tours, attending receptions and sporting events, participating in community service projects and experiencing Baltimore.
MDFWASB is Baltimore’s celebration of the sea services and provides an opportunity for the citizens of Maryland and the city of Baltimore to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services.
