BALTIMORE (NNS) -- Sailors assigned to the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine USS Maryland (SSBN 738) visited Medfield Heights Elementary School students as part of Maryland Fleet Week and Air Show Baltimore (MDFWASB) on Oct. 8.

“Our students aren’t exposed to Sailors very often,” said Cathy Chiavacci, Medfield Heights assistant principal. “I think it’s unique for them to see that lifestyle and see what’s really out there. Before all the Sailors joined the classrooms, students were already preparing questions for them. The kids were very excited to meet them.”

The Maryland crew added the school visit to their schedule after Chiavacci met one of their Sailors in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.

“A bunch of friends and myself were down for fleet week looking at all the amazing ships and one of the Sailors came up to us and was very friendly. He mentioned Sailors from his command visited schools in the city, so I asked him if he could visit our school and he made that happen. We were very grateful for this opportunity for our students to meet some amazing people,” said Chiavacci.

The Sailor she met was Lt.j.g. Bryan Cooley, the Maryland’s damage control assistant. He participated in all of the ship’s fleet week events and was appreciative of Baltimore’s hospitality.

“It was fantastic to come and talk to the kids and the Baltimore community as a whole was very accommodating. They pulled out all the stops and rolled out the red carpet for us. It was great to be able to come up and show our namesake state that USS Maryland is doing great things down in Georgia,” said Cooley.

Maryland Sailors participated in various community outreach events, met with the Baltimore Ravens and made a third and final school visit to wrap up their MDFWASB engagements.

MDFWASB is Baltimore’s celebration of the sea services and provides an opportunity for the citizens of Maryland and the city of Baltimore to meet Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen, as well as see firsthand the latest capabilities of today’s maritime services.
