HOHENFELS TRAINING AREA, Germany – Preparation is the key to any successful operation. Military history has proven this true by recounts of the planning phases of battles.
Planning is the foundation of victory!
This is a practice the leadership of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division (1st ABCT, 1st CD), instills in its First Team servicemembers by burning the midnight oil, during the Military Decision Making Process, until an all-encompassing plan from the brigade and battalions levels are approved.
First Team servicemembers, riding in long 48-passenger and five-passenger iron horses, rolled into the Hohenfels Training Area, Germany, for a four-day Leaders Training Program in support of the Joint Multinational Readiness Center’s Combined Resolve XI (CbR XI) training exercise beginning Sept. 30, 2018.
The CbR XI training exercise is scheduled for late November 2018. The LTP allows the First Team leadership to interact with the multinational and the other U.S. military unit supporting the training exercise, as well as coordinate transportation, establish an operational picture and identify the equipment needs for the multinational training exercise.
The MDMP process is a key component of personal, staff development. This process is typically handled by senior ranking service members, but First Team begins this development process earlier.
“It’s definitely been a learning experience,” said Spc. Nathaniel Rodriquez, an intelligence analyst specialist assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 91st Brigade Engineer Battalion, 1st ABCT, 1st CD. “I’ve never been to an LTP before, but by doing this it gives me a better understanding of what we’re getting ourselves into during our (CbR XI) training exercise.”
Utilizing mature junior non-commissioned officers to fill senior NCO positions to accomplish the mission, and wear the red-enemy hat, provides more skilled and experienced Soldiers.
“It’s my job, being an intel analyst, to place myself into the enemy’s shoes and access what they would do,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Gisela Paz, the senior intelligence non-commissioned officer assigned to the 1st Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 1st ABCT, 1st CD. “Since us (the 1-82 FA) being the only artillery battalion (assigned to the 1st ABCT, 1st CD) we have to focus more on the artillery aspect, then the maneuver aspect of intelligence. So, it’ll help the battalion, as well as the brigade, to protect our forces from enemy artillery on the battlefield.”
Repeated deployments for the same mission assist with on-the-ground understanding and operational success. This is true for U.S. Army Cpl. Jeremy Spoor. He’s currently deployed for the second time in support of Atlantic Resolve in Europe.
“As a corporal I’ve been given a lot of responsibility, and I’m very happy to take it on. I’ve been put in charge of the security perimeters of our base support clusters, a new establishment. We went from a base support assembly, which is more commonly used more in Iraq and Afghanistan as a 360-degree security perimeter because you can be seen from all side. We’ll be more nested here, into the forestry and use the terrain features for cover and concealment and be successful,” said Spoor, an intelligence analyst assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 115th Brigade Support Battalion, 1st ABCT, 1st CD. “Well, (my job during LTP) is an S3 function. I enjoy taking it on. It’s a thinking process. I directly assist the battalion commander of the enemy situation past, present and future events based on past and current TTPs (tactics, techniques and procedures). Basically, giving him an awareness of the battlefield, so he can refine his processes and make influenced decisions that help support the brigade and higher.”
The FirstTeam brigade has been deployed in support of Atlantic Resolve in Europe since May 2018. CbR XI is one of the numerous multinational training exercises the brigade is scheduled to conduct, or has conducted since being stationed at different training area throughout Eastern Europe.
