CAMP AS-SAYLIYAH, Qatar (October 9, 2018) – While the Army Ten-Miler is an annual event partaken by many service members throughout the world, it is an especially unique experience in the middle of the desert at Camp As-Sayliyah, Qatar. At 0400 on Sunday Soldiers from Camp As-Sayliyah and Al Udeid Air Force Base gathered to take part in the grueling race.
In 74 percent humidity and a heat index of 90 degrees Fahrenheit, the runners were feeling the sweat before the race started. The heat did not deter the participants however, which showcased how tough and determined the competitors were. Soldiers could compete as individuals or as teams. The course consisted of three laps around the dirt path surrounding the base, and throughout the course volunteers were handing out much-needed water and cheers of support.
Positive attitudes fueled the event, and many Soldiers ran with a battle buddy for motivation and encouragement.
Capt. Jessica Rosario of Area-Support Group Qatar said, “The Army 10-miler was a great opportunity to create esprit de corps among our brothers and sisters in arms.”
Afterwards the winners from each category were recognized in an awards ceremony.
Sgt. Jay Wohlrab of 1st Medical Brigade said, “It was really cool to see so many people motivated towards the same goal.”
Talking with some of the participants following the awards ceremony, all were proud of their achievements in finishing the ten miles. In asking how they planned to celebrate for the rest of the day, most agreed they were off to enjoy some well-deserved naps.
