Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training Unit (CNATTU) Keesler students, instructors and staff were on hand for a celebration commemorating the 243rd Navy Birthday Oct. 12.

The ceremony, led by Electronics Technician 1st Class Bauranege Fleurimond, included a history of the U.S. Navy’s birth.

“It’s important to know where we come from,” said Fleurimond. “Our history and heritage is an integral part of our service culture, and today is a great day to share a piece of that with the next generation of Sailors.”

Attendees also heard from CNATTU’s Commanding Officer, Cmdr. Timothy Knapp.

“This year’s ‘Forged By The Sea’ theme fits perfectly with our training mission here at Keesler,” said Knapp. “Many of our course graduates are headed to deployable units.”

To close out the celebration, a cake is traditionally cut by the oldest and youngest Sailor. This year, Aerographer’s Mate Airman Geoffrey Haraway and Chief Aerographer’s Mate Andrew Ribar were honored with the duties. After cutting, the oldest Sailor passes the first slice to the youngest to symbolize the passing of experience from one generation of Sailor to the next.

“It’s exciting to be a part of this ceremony today,” said Haraway. “I’m looking forward to graduation and getting out to the fleet and experiencing everything the Navy is offering me.”

CNATTU Keesler is a training unit of the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) located at Naval Air Station Pensacola, Florida. CNATT develops, delivers, and supports aviation technical training at 27 sites located throughout the continental United States and Japan.

CNATT is the largest training center under Naval Education and Training Command, and is a technical training agent for the Naval Aviation Enterprise, an organization designed to advance and sustain naval aviation warfighting capabilities at an affordable cost.
