YAVORIV, Ukraine- Members from the Tennessee Army National Guard teamed up with the Self-Defense Organization in Yavoriv to host the Patriot Games for the local boy and girl scouts, here, Oct. 14.

The Patriot Games is an annual, friendly competition where the scouts and local teenagers participate in a series of challenging events.

The scouts divided into three teams and competed in 12 events to include: tug-o-war, bow and arrow, basketball toss and jump rope. The final game included a series of obstacles in which the teams had to work together to complete. It began with an individual 100-meter sprint, which led to a water crossing event and ended in an all-out race to the top of the hill to retrieve their flag and cross the finish line.

This year, the Americans brought a new event to Patriot Games called, “Save Your Buddy Pumpkin Relay or Operation Pumpkin Rescue.” This event simulated a medical evacuation as well as brought a bit of fall into the mix. The teams had to assess and treat a simulated injury on a fellow team member by wrapping them with toilet paper. The teams then had to transport the casualty to the other end of the field and, together, deliver a pumpkin to the center of the area.

“It was so cool to see the kids really get into it and to share a bit about what we do in the U.S. Army but also teach them the importance of time in the case of an emergency,” stated Sgt. First Class Nick Carter. “It was also fun to see the scouts perform their abbreviated version of first aid and work together to accomplish the task.”

The scouts and locals included boys and girls ranging in ages from ten to sixteen.

Not only were the scouts participating in the games, some were selling homemade desserts to fund for their upcoming forest camp in October.

The Head of the Yavoriv Plast Scouts Organization, Stanistka Inyna, stated the scouts have three core fundamentals, “Be loyal to God and Ukraine, help others and obey the rules.”

The Patriot Games concluded in an awards ceremony for the three teams and a dinner provided by the locals.

“It’s an honor to be invited here to participate in the Patriot Games,” stated 2nd Lt. Richard Mayfield. “Thanks for this wonderful experience and I look forward to more events like this in the future.”

This is the second year U.S. Soldiers deployed to Ukraine have been invited to participate in the Patriot Games.

The 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment is deployed to Ukraine and supporting the continual development of their combat training center.
