ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Thirty-one sports medicine providers from Naval Health Clinic Annapolis participated in a sports medicine emergency management training evolution called "In 2 Minutes or Less" at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium Sept. 28.
The evidence-based training spanned over five hours, was hands-on, practical, and designed to teach and reinforce life-saving sports medicine evaluation and management skills, while allowing for integrated and collaborative team training.
“Practice makes perfect, and this was an outstanding opportunity to enhance our skills and ensure that we are following best practices for the care of our midshipmen,” said Cmdr. Lance LeClere, U.S. Naval Academy team physician.
The providers, comprised of six corpsmen, 14 team physicians, and 11 U.S. Naval Academy athletic trainers practiced these life-saving skills in a multidisciplinary team simulating sideline emergencies.
LeClere had the pleasure of introducing the six corpsmen that have been chosen as the first group of fellows in the Ray Chronister Sports Medicine Career Development Program.
Named after retired navy senior chief petty officer and U.S. Naval Academy Athletic Trainer Ray Chronister, the program is designed to provide sports medicine experience and career development and mentorship to junior enlisted Sailors who may seek careers as an independent duty corpsman, certified athletic trainer, physician assistant, physical therapist, or physician.
Participants were competitively chosen and will complete several program requirements, including skills training such as the "In 2 Minutes or Less" training, sideline and training room clinical hours, and curriculum vitae and personal statement writing and editing.
