SAN DIEGO (NNS) –Senior Naval leadership visited the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in San Diego, on October 15, 2018 to explore opportunities for community partnerships, as well as volunteer service opportunities for local Sailors and their families.
Rear Adm. Cedric Pringle, Commander, Expeditionary Strike Group 3 (ESG-3), and Rear Adm. Yancy Lindsey, Commander, Navy Region Southwest (CNRSW), participated in the tour.
“The future is bright,” said Pringle. “This facility is a reflection of strong leadership, and I think there are lots of opportunities for our Sailors to get involved and do more to lead the youth in the community here.”
Michael Brunker, Executive Director of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA, and Eugene Bailey, a board member and retired Navy Captain, led a tour of the recently renovated and expanded facility. They also discussed plans for future expansions and how the YMCA will continue to serve the local community.
“The ‘Y’ is just a great asset for the community,” added Lindsey. “They do so much for the men and women that live in this area and for our military. We’re excited to bring these [partnership] opportunities to our men and women in uniform.”
The senior Naval leadership’s visit to the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is one step in both Lindsey’s and Pringle’s commitment to encourage and enable the many Sailors in their commands to further engage in their local communities.
CNRSW encompasses six states with a large military presence. More than 75,000 active duty Sailors serve within 10 installations throughout the region.
ESG-3 comprises three amphibious squadrons, eight naval support elements and 15 amphibious warships comprised of more than 15,000 active-duty and reserve Sailors and Marines. The mission of ESG-3 is to serve as the command element for Marine expeditionary-brigade level expeditionary operations as commander of an amphibious task force.
