    Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport

    NEWPORT, R.I. — Hector Lopez of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, has been selected as head of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles and Defensive Systems Department, the largest of the departs at NUWC with more than 650 federal employees.

    In this role, he is responsible for technical leadership and full spectrum engineering in support of research, development, acquisition and in-service activities associated with torpedoes, unmanned vehicles, countermeasures and towed defensive systems.

    In his previous assignment, Lopez served as deputy department head for the same department since its creation almost five years ago. In his 27-year career with NUWC Newport, Lopez has held a variety of technical and managerial leadership positions, including deputy department head, division head, branch head, project manager and lead engineer in the former Torpedo Systems Department.

    Lopez has a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico earned in 1990 and a master's in business administration received from the University of Rhode Island in 2001.

    NUWC Division Newport, part of the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA), is one of two divisions of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center. NUWC Division Newport’s mission is to provide research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures. NUWC’s other division is located in Keyport, Washington.
