October is National Disability Employment Awareness month, and the Air Force Equal Opportunity program located here was given the Department of Defense Disability Award during a presentation at the Pentagon, Oct. 4, 2018.
The Air Force received the award six out of the last seven years.
“The Air Force has placed significant resources and attention to ensure we increase the numbers of [people] with disabilities we hire,” said Cyrus Salazar, director of Air Force EO. “We view [people] with disabilities as an integral part of the workforce. We are looking to ensure that we have an Air Force that is representative of the demographics of America.”
The Air Force utilizes multiple programs to continue efforts in hiring individuals with disabilities. The direct hire, Wounded Warrior Project, Work Force Recruitment and Exceptional Family Member Program all create employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities.
According to the Air Force Disability Program, the Air Force employs 1.34 percent of its civilian workforce as people with disabilities, a number the Air Force is looking to increase.
“The federal government has a two percent goal of [hiring] individuals with target disabilities in the workforce,” said Kendra Shock, Air Force disability program manager. “For the last six years, the percentage of individuals working for the Air force has steadily increased.”
Shock reinforced that the Air Force is on track to meet its goal within the next few years and will continue to push the noncompetitive appointment hiring process.
