SAN DIEGO – Rear Adm. John Okon, commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, and oceanographer and navigator of the Navy, visited Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) San Diego, Oct. 17.

Okon began his visit with a command brief provided by Lt. Cmdr. John Connally, executive officer of IWTC San Diego. They discussed day-to-day operations as well as potential avenues for continuing to enhance synergies that the information warfare community (IWC) has brought to the once disparate fields it encompasses.

“The success of the IWC, and ultimately that of the Navy writ large, is dependent on actively engaged leadership at all levels of command,” commented Connally. “Hosting Rear Adm. Okon provided an excellent opportunity for leaders at IWTC San Diego to exchange insights on sustaining and enhancing the synergistic ties that enable the IWC to continually take the Navy’s warfighting capabilities to new heights.”

Afterward, Okon met with the Chiefs Mess and Wardroom at IWTC San Diego for a naval oceanography overview and leadership development discussion, followed by a question and answer session. Okon fielded questions on a wide variety of subjects, and on several occasions, stressed the importance of looking toward the future.

“Investing in people and capabilities will enable us to survive as a community; innovation is required in order for us to thrive,” offered Okon. “Data is evolving at such a great speed that we must evolve warfighting even faster to maintain a competitive edge.”

IWTC San Diego, as part of the Center for Information Warfare Training, provides a continuum of training to Navy and joint service personnel that prepares them to conduct information warfare across the full spectrum of military operations.
