POHANG CITY, GYEONGSANG, Republic of Korea-- Republic of Korea Marines, U.S. Marines, and Korean citizens attended the 2018 Pohang Marine Corps Cultural Festival in Pohang City, Republic of Korea, Oct. 20-22.
The three-day event was organized by the Republic of Korea Marine Corps Veterans Association in order to display the capabilities of the ROK Marine Corps and celebrate the ROKMC.
“Through the festival we want to demonstrate our appreciation for Pohang because the city has welcomed us,” said Col. Sekou S. Karega, camp commander of Camp Mujuk. “Our services are better prepared due to the support of the community which allows us to focus on training and readiness to protect our great nations.”
The festival included tactical vehicle static displays, an aeronautical demonstration, and parade. Camp Mujuk based Marines marched alongside the ROK Marines during the parade, signifying their partnership.
“The invitation to the festival, as well as the ROKMC giving us the opportunity to march with them was an honor,” said 1st Sergeant Jorge E. Cedeno-Tulloch, the senior enlisted advisor for Camp Mujuk. “This festival showed the world that our organizations have a bond that will only become stronger and the pride that Pohang and the ROK Marines have for the ROKMC.”
Pohang is home to the 1st Republic of Korea Marine Division. All ROK Marines attend basic training at the 1st ROK Marine Corps Division Base.
“As the only U.S. Marine Corps installation in Korea, Marines from Camp Mujuk are attending the local event,” said Kyong Cha Ha, the community relations specialist for Camp Mujuk. “This is a great chance to strengthen the Republic of Korea and U.S. alliance.”
While this event marks the second annual Pohang Marine Corps Cultural Festival, the 2019 festival commemorates the 70th anniversary of the ROK Marine Corps.
