TEXARKANA, Texas (NNS) – When Navy Electrician’s Mate 2nd Class Chris Medve enters a room, the gym, a Navy Recruiting Station … virtually anywhere there are Future Sailors – they all immediately stop talking and fix their eyes on him.
“I work hard for their respect,” said Medve. “They know I respect them too, because they also work hard for mine. I think that’s what I like most about being a Navy Special Programs Scout in the Navy. Nearly everyone that I meet is ready to put in work, and I’m here to do the same.”
Medve is one of Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Houston’s Navy Special Operations/Special Warfare (NSO/NSW) Program scouts. His job is to find the best and brightest men and women who are ready to commit to one of the toughest training pipelines in the world. Medve is the first to decide if those ready have the integrity and work ethic for possible placement into one of the Navy’s five NSO/NSW programs including; Navy SEAL, Navy Special Warfare Combatant-craft Crewmen (SWCC), Navy Diver, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) and Navy Aviation Air Rescue Swimmer (AIRR).
“Bottom line, and I tell them all this, any candidate that walks through that door is entering a possible lifestyle where things like maximum effort, pain and integrity will become immediate parts of their life – and it starts the second they see my face,” said Medve.
Medve hails from Cleveland and is a die-hard Ohio sports fan. His charisma and drive was born from his background in athletics and from his family. Nearly everyone in Medve’s family either has or is currently serving in the military. His father served six years as a Machinist’s Mate with the Nuclear Program. He fixed and serviced shipboard equipment throughout the highly classified on-board nuclear power plants. Medve’s two brothers also currently serve. One as a pilot and one as a Cryptologic Intelligence Technician.
The Medve family has placed devotion to service into their lineage and something Chris’s father, Scott Medve, says is what defines them.
“We are Americans,” said Scott. “I’ve taught my children and myself to look past the other things people could see us as and focus on the one thing we all are – proud Americans and shipmates.”
Medve serves the Texarkana recruiting area. A semi-rural area juxtaposed to its closest markets being Dallas and Houston. Within these series of small towns interconnected by malls and small shopping areas, Medve is a charismatic light shining light to the diversity, etiquette and overall inspiration that a single recruiter with the right attitude can provide. In any arena, he simply stands apart.
As Medve’s three-year tour as a recruiter comes to a close, he expresses that as he goes back to the fleet, he will teach other Sailors with the leadership experience and knowledge he learned as a recruiter.
The Navy’s recruiting force totals over 6,100 personnel in more than 1,000 recruiting stations around the globe. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
NRC consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 20 Navy Recruiting Districts and six Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 1,000 recruiting stations across the country.
