MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – The start of November marks the beginning of holiday season, but this year for Marines it also means participating in training exercises like Trident Juncture and Combined Unit Exercise. While Marines are overseas or at sea supporting the mission, their families are often celebrating the holidays without them or holding down the fort awaiting their return.
General Robert B. Neller, Commandant of the Marine Corps, released a letter, ALMAR 030/18 on Oct. 24, reminding Marines that November is recognized as Military Family Appreciation Month.
“Marine Families are the epitome of strength, resiliency, and sacrifice, and through the many challenges of military life, they have never wavered in their support,” said Neller. “They are true patriots that support those wearing the uniform and build the readiness of other Marine Corps Families.”
According to the administrative letter, Military Family Month began in 1993 to recognize what families do, and commands are encouraged to support special events and activities for families. Since then, the President of the United States and the U.S. Government have both recognized the importance of the month.
“D'Arcy and I know first-hand the extraordinary resolve of the Marine Family in support of the warfighter,” said Neller. “The strength of the Marine Family through deployment, relocation, and separation allows Marines to stay mission focused. We are proud and share our heartfelt appreciation for every Marine Corps Family.”
The Marine Corps Camp Lejeune and New River is home to Marine and Family Programs, which provide four major programs meant to support military communities.
“I think if the families used them, they would be good,” said Navy Lieutenant Grant Eubanks, the Chaplain for Headquarters and Support Battalion, Marine Corps Installations East, Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “Because there are enough resources out there, that we have such a varied and broad reach of what the Marine Corps offers.”
According to Chaplain Eubanks, families can go through the Marine Corps Community Counseling Center, L.I.N.K.S (lifestyles, insights, networking, knowledge and skills), family team building, chaplains or Marine and Family Life counselors and much more.
“Without family being taken care of, a warfighter is less capable of performing to their best ability at war,” said Eubanks. “It’s essential to take care of the family, and I think that the Marine Corps realized how important the family was to the warfighter.”
