Col. Max Pearson, 480th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Wing commander, toured the 548th ISR Group for the first time at Beale Air Force Base, Oct. 3 and 4, 2018.

Pearson became the commander of the 480th ISRW, headquartered at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, Virginia, in June. The visit was part of his immersion tour, which consisted of meeting Airmen and learning about the group’s mission.

“I’m a believer that the best way to serve my organization is to share context with my Airmen,” said Pearson. “The best ideas created in this organization come from the Airmen. The more context Airmen understand, the better they will be able to generate innovative ideas and keep the spirit of this organization alive.”

The 480th ISRW, home to more than 6,000 military members, is an Air Force leader in globally-networked ISR operations. The 548th ISRG plays a significant role in the wing’s mission by delivering combat ISR power from the air, providing intelligence for the United States and its allies, and supporting combat operations.

“The Airmen here have built an amazing reputation for achieving the mission and delivering results downrange for our Department of Defense combatant commanders,” said Pearson. “The innovation in this wing is renowned across the Air Force.”

The 548th is one of six ISRGs that Pearson oversees worldwide. The other Distributed Ground Systems are located at Fort Gordon, Georgia; Joint Base Langley - Eustis, Virginia; JB Pearl Harbor - Hickam, Hawaii; Ramstein Air Base, Germany; and Osan AB, Republic of Korea.

“Col. Pearson and I want every Airman in this wing to feel valued by every level of leadership,” said Chief Master Sgt. Summer Leifer, 480th ISRW command chief, who accompanied the commander on his tour. “We need help with accomplishing this, and one of the ways we can achieve this goal is by conducting visits with Airmen in their workplaces and hear their thoughts and feelings.”

The wing commander and command chief visited the U-2 Dragon Lady Optical Bar Camera Film Processing Center, operations floor and Distributed Ground System-2 Annex. Throughout their visit, Pearson and Leifer learned about the group’s mission execution, quality of life, work environment and culture of innovation.

“The Airmen here are part of something much bigger than themselves, and they are doing amazing things for our military and nation,” said Pearson. “I would like to say thanks for the excellence they bring to the mission, and I’m proud to stand here and be this wing’s commander.”
