After more than a month operating in the North Atlantic, including participating in NATO Exercise Trident Juncture 2018, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) anchored off the coast of Lisbon, Portugal, Nov. 10 for a scheduled port visit.

Welcomed by one of the U.S.’s oldest partners and NATO ally, Harry S. Truman will participate in serval community outreach events and host a formal reception in the ship’s hangar bay to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

“We are honored to visit and enjoy the friendship and support of a country with such a proud history, and which so wholeheartedly contributes to the NATO alliance,” said Commander, Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group, Rear Adm. Gene Black. “As we commemorate the end of the First World War together, we look forward to continuing our tradition of partnership which has stood strong for over 100 years.”

Along with being able to explore one of the more culturally diverse cities in Western Europe, Harry S. Truman Sailors will have the opportunity to participate in three different community relations projects, including a visit to a homeless shelter, the Ronald MacDonald house, and a forest restoration project. Furthermore, the crew has several Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) tours available to a number of surrounding cities as well as many of Lisbon’s famous sites.

"I'm very excited to be here in Lisbon, because I've heard it is very rich in culture and has a lot of beautiful art,” said Electronics Technician 2nd Class Samantha Winn. “I also love to surf and I saw that when we pull in the swells are going to be 30-35 feet - so I'm excited for that opportunity!"

Harry S. Truman is deployed to the U.S. Sixth Fleet area of operations, and will continue to foster regional allies and partners, strengthen regional stability and remain vigilant, agile and dynamic.
