MURNAU, Germany – The U.S. Army’s 52d Strategic Signal Battalion, 2d Theater Signal Brigade, formalized a partnership with the Bundeswehr 293rd IT Battalion at a ceremony Nov. 8, 2018, at Werdenfelser Kaserne in Murnau.
The goal of the partnership is to identify, plan and facilitate opportunities to enhance relationships, interoperability and readiness between the two allies through shared training, exercises and social activities.
U.S. Army Col. Neil Khatod, commander of 2d Theater Signal Bde., explained that the partnership builds upon a shared history between the U.S. and Germany and is an important step to enhancing common understanding.
“The relationship between the German and American Signal battalions is more than a simple partnership, it is a Partenschaft, a relationship that can be likened to a godparent, assuming responsibility for someone else,” Khatod said.
German Army Brig. Gen. Dietmar Mosmann, Bundeswehr CIS Command deputy commanding general and commander of troops, said partnership always has been, and always will be, a cornerstone of Germany’s multinational relationships.
“To strengthen this cooperation we have to share common views and common values – they are the very foundation of a successful partnership which serves a common purpose,” he said.
Mosmann said the long history of U.S. troops in Germany has contributed to freedom and security in Europe and Germany.
“Your service here alongside us, far from your home and oftentimes separated from your families, is of utmost importance to us. Your contributions to our safety and security are verily recognized and truly appreciated. I am convinced that the only way to face the challenges of today and tomorrow is together as one,” he said.
During the ceremony Soldiers from the 52d Strategic Signal Bn. and the 293rd IT Bn. Stood in formation together, then Khatod and Mosmann each presented partnership certificates to the leaders of the two units.
German Army Lt. Col. Marc Richter, commander of the Bundeswehr 293rd IT Battalion, said partnership, especially between the German and American armies, is essential to operating together.
“In the future, we will have to do our job together with our partners, therefore it is essential to fulfill our missions and our tasks, to train and exercise together,” Richter said. “From a CIS perspective, it is essential before we deploy anywhere to make sure that our systems will work together.”
Some 2d Theater Signal Bde. units already have similar partnerships with other Bundeswehr CIS Command units: The 102d Strategic Signal Battalion in Wiesbaden is partnered with the Bundeswehr 282nd IT Battalion in Kastellaun; the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion in Grafenwoehr is partnered with the Bundeswehr 383rd IT Battalion in Erfurt; and last week 2d Theater Signal Bde. signed a cooperation agreement with the Bundeswehr CIS Command to renew the Interoperability Cooperation Group.
“I pledge to you and the Bundeswehr CIS Command,” Khatod said addressing Mosmann, “my full support for this newly-formed partnership so that it can evolve into a partnership with a purpose, characterized by true camaraderie, soldierly friendship, and our ability to fight and win together, if called upon.”
