RIGA, Latvia- U.S. and other NATO Forces helped Latvia celebrate 100 years of independence during an Independence Day Parade in Riga, Latvia, Nov. 18, 2018.
The parade was one of many events held commemorating the day the Latvian government officially declared their freedom from the Russian Empire.
“Throughout the past century, the U.S. has been a strong ally, partner and friend of the Latvian people,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Cristina Moore Urrutia, the United States Air Force Band in Europe commanding director. “We are honored to represent that friendship through our participation in the Independence Day events."
Latvia was one of the most industrial regions of the Russian Empire prior to the first World War. The Brest-Litovsk peace treaty signed on March 3, 1918 laid the groundwork for the establishment of the Latvian People’s Council on Nov. 17, 1918. The council declared Latvia as an independent republic Nov. 18, 1918 and since they have fought alongside other NATO forces to ensure independence for all.
“This was a little more personal for me, I served beside them (Latvian forces) in 2008/2009,” said U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Shawn Menard, assigned to the 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team and the senior NCOIC for the United States Army Europe Color Guard during the parade. “We lost three of our own guys and two Latvian soldiers……the guys you fight with becomes like your family, I love these guys.”
The pageantry of the parade showed Latvia’s commitment to independence and the day was highlighted by a speech from Latvia’s President, Raimonds Vejonis, who gave thanks to all those who came to participate in the celebration.
“We have a unique role through our outreach concerts to connect with the community in a very personal way through music,” said Moore Urrutia. “Aiding in the fight against disinformation, reinforcing that friendship……. helping the next generation see its value.”
U.S. Army Lt. Col. Tim Ferguson, battalion commander of the 2nd Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, led a group of IRONHORSE Soldiers currently on rotation supporting Atlantic Resolve through the parade. Spectators also were able to witness a U.S. Patriot System from the 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command, which was part of the parade procession.
" It was an honor to be asked to participate in this celebration and the Soldiers from 10th Army Air and missile Defense Command really enjoyed themselves,” said U.S. Army Col. David E. Shank, the commander of the 10th AAMDC. “The Independence Day parade was a display of Latvian and multi-national forces and military equipment capabilities from NATO and European partners. It was a clear display of solidarity and great day to witness.”
