FORT STEWART, Georgia – Paratroopers from the 82nd Airborne Division used their real-world skills in virtual battlefield scenarios to defeat enemy attacks during a 14-day warfighter exercise at Fort Stewart, GA in November.

The warfighter exercise is a two-week command and control exercise used to test and evaluate a headquarters reaction and methods of battle pertaining to its management and execution abilities, through a virtual battlefield.

The scenario involved the division as part of the U.S. Army’s Task Force West, made up of the 1st Armored, 3rd Infantry and 82nd Airborne Division. It simulated their deployment to bolster a foreign nation’s forces and to repel enemy forces.

“These exercises are critical to help key staff work through their systems and processes and make sure that their planning, synchronization, inner-staff, communication and synergy is meeting what is required to execute for a real-world fight,” said Sgt. Maj. Jonny Resseguie, the 82nd Airborne Division G3 sergeant major.

The exercise allowed the Division to conduct reconnaissance operations, refine staff products and procedures, provide subordinate brigades with timely information and provide logistic support and consolidation throughout the operation.

“I have taken away a good deal of knowledge from this WFX,” said Sgt. Michael Wellington, an 82nd Airborne Division Paratrooper from the Division Main Signal Platoon. “The rigorous training that my team and I have received from this exercise is essential to provide the division with the capabilities to fight and win the war.”

Additionally, the skills learned during the exercise will translate into domestic, national and international civilian and military-led missions. It will prepare the division’s headquarters for deployment to support U.S. interests anywhere in the world.

“I am very confident for a deployment,” said Wellington. “I believe that I am prepared to tackle most if not any malfunctions that may occur during any operation.”

Now the division soldiers stand ready for their next command-post exercise slated for January 2019.

“I think during WFX 19-2 we’ve identified some things we need to tighten up before we get to WFX 19-3,” said Resseguie. “It’s just a matter of allocating the time, space and the work days between now and then to refine what we need before we go into the next exercise.”

As the Army continues to evolve and adapt in order to operate in increasingly complex environments, this consistent and cohesive approach of training builds the readiness needed to face the ever-changing conditions on today’s, and future battlefields, with confidence.
