Marine Corps Community Services, Youth and Teen Center hosted an annual Youth and Teen Halloween Party with the Shunan International Children’s Club at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan, Oct. 27, 2018.

The party consisted of Air Station residents and Japanese children from Shunan City, taking part in a haunted house, a snack bar and a game of hop and shoot.

“The purpose of the Halloween party was to provide both American and Japanese youth with the opportunity to participate in a fun and safe event,” said Geraldine Ragin, the Youth and Teen Center director. “The youth were provided an opportunity to connect through playing games from both cultures, eating American and Japanese style treats and experiencing language and cultural differences.”

For this year’s annual event, the Shunan International Children’s Club joined the Youth and Teen Center in planning.

“This party has occurred for the last 12-15 years; however, this is the very first time that the Shunan International Children's Club has collaborated with us,” said Ragin. “The Shunan International Children's Club did a great job with the haunted house.”

The Halloween party served as another way for Americans and Japanese to come together and experience new things.

“These types of events are great for building community relationships,” said Ragin. “The adults and youth are able to build long lasting friendships and memories that could last a life-time. It is very important that, as adults, we continue to be that bridge for our future leaders as well as taking advantage of such a unique opportunity to learn from each other.”
