BAGRAM, Afghanistan – On Tuesday October 9th, Task Force Lightning held its ‘Patching Ceremony’, a military tradition in which each soldier on their first combat deployment receives the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (commonly referred to as a ‘deployment patch’). The combat patch is worn on a soldier’s right arm underneath the American flag, and it represents having served on a designated combat deployment.
The combat patch is tied to a rich American tradition of unit pride, dating back to WWI when the 81st “Wildcat” Division wore panthers on their right sleeves while serving in France.
“Since arriving in Afghanistan the company's soldiers have all been performing outstandingly,” said Capt. Charlie Gerkin, commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, Task Force Lightning.
By WWII, all U.S. Army units sported unique shoulder sleeve insignias, many of which are still worn today, like the 82nd Airborne’s All American patch.
“In our first two months here we have already had a huge impact on intelligence collection and dissemination across Afghanistan, we are truly lucky to have such a professional and capable team of Lightning soldiers,” said Gerkin.
During the ceremony, the company commander and first sergeant spoke about the significance of a deployment patch as well as some of the history behind the 525th MI Brigade’s patch, which stretches back to WWII.
“Patching means a sense of esprit de corps and unit cohesion. It is an absolute pleasure to serve alongside young patriots who have sacrificed their time to serve our great nation. Their dedication and commitment to service speaks volumes in our efforts to keep America safe,” said 1st Sgt. Terrish Butler.
The 525th has served in every major conflict since WWII and has deployed in support of several contingency missions. The soldiers of Task Force Lightning now carry on that tradition of being the first intelligence brigade that the U.S. Army calls on whenever needed.
